Asteroids Concept
Asteroids Concept was a short game demo I have been working on for a short programmer test I was assigned recently.
The test was to create a game based on the classic Arcade Game, Asteroids, in no more than a week.
I quickly decided that a unique way to represent Asteroids in the modern era would be to create 2.5D version of the game. Essentially the same game (from a top down perspective), but with enhanced graphics and visuals. The game, much like it's inspiration, features a player controlled space ship that fires lasers from it's front. From here, using both your flying and aiming skills, you must avoid and destroy the waves of incoming asteroids. The Assets used in this game were kindly provided freely by various creators on the Unity Asset Store & the sounds are from Findsounds.com. |
A lot of the concepts within this game I have already come across before, so it was good exercise in executing some of the skills I already knew. In a slight deviation from the original, I added a progressively harder wave system that increases both the speed and number of asteroids that come your way with each passing round and a Health System to allow the player some breathing room. This is because, in the original Asteroids game, a "Screen-Wrap" mechanic is featured so that when you cross the edge of the screen you are wrapped back around to the other side, as such, if the player fires a tonne of bullets around the screen it can get very hectic! That being side, I decided to include an insta-death feature should you collide with an Asteroid.
The ship controls with the W, A and D Keys, with the space bar acting as your gun trigger. Destroy Asteroids to earn points and try not to shoot yourself in the process or fly into them! As with the original, bigger asteroids split into 2 when destroyed.
As the test was intended to be completed in a week the game is in a playable but, what I would call, uncompleted state. There is no music and very few sounds, a lack of a lives system and ordinarily I would have liked to include various "housekeeping" game-play upgrades such as power ups, a nicer looking title screen, varying enemies and obstacles and general polish such as Pause and Options screens.
