Zombies Concept
Like most teenagers of my generation, my love for this genre was first realised when playing the iconic Nazi Zombies on Call of Duty: World at War. This is my own spin on this type of game with a number of unique gameplay elements.
The concept of the game is simple, you play as a lone hero in a world overrun by zombies. The world is inhabited by 3 types of players, Civilians, Zombies and of course, the player.
Civilians will wander around the map changing direction when they hit another object. Zombies will aggressively run towards their nearest target which will either be you, or a civilian. Upon catching up to a civilian, they will "infect" them and the civilian will turn into a zombie and adopt the aggressive behaviour of it's slayer. If you're feeling heroic you can shoot a zombie before it catches a civilian which will override the zombies targeting system so that he will now hunt you down no matter the distance for a short while. |
The game features a number of weapons and collectables for the player to exploit including: Pistols, Machine Guns, Grenade Launchers and Health Packs. Each of the character objects have an independent health system that is either damaged by zombies, or bullets (or both!). All of the weapons have a unique Ammo Supply that can be topped up by breaking the various crates scattered throughout the level which will randomly spawn an object upon breaking. You may have also noticed the cylinders scattered around the play space, shooting these will have explosive repercussions which will damage both the player and the zombies; A fun way to cut down the ever growing horde in one fell swoop!
This game was also a fun place to practice and make use of Unity's awesome physics engine. Each of the characters can move along all 3 Axis by running, jumping, falling etc. and the explosions created by either shooting the "barrels" or from the grenade launcher's grenades, will fling objects around the play space with different force depending on how close they were to the explosion.
Online Mode
A friend of mine heard about me making this particular concept and was immediately intrigued at the idea of essentially recreating one of our favourite games but tailoring it to exactly what we wanted. I started looking into the possibility of creating an online version of my Zombies Concept so that we could play together.
Unity has a number of great networking features that I had a lot of fun play testing. Through a fair amount of trial and error I even got a cooperative version fully working so that me and my friend could play together across the internet! Although the civilians are no longer present, this version features full 2 player characters, zombies that target the nearest player, full collectibles compatibility and even boss units.

Zombies Concept in Action
Here is a gameplay video of the Zombies Concept Demo that I've published on Youtube. The game features a range of Sound Effects so make sure your volume is suitably cranked up!
