Racing Concept
Racing Concept is a short demo I have been working on since re-falling in love with Mario Kart this year thanks to Nintendo's latest offering on the new Switch Console.
|
The game features a simple controllable car with selectable parts that affect it's performance in different categories, such as speed, handling and acceleration. The game features 5 AI opponents with unique attributes to race against. It also has a Lap System that detects the order in which racers complete the course.
Unique features include a "Tour Car" that gives the user a preview of the track, before initiating a countdown and commencing the race, re-spawning "Boost Orbs" which give the player a small amount of Turbo boost which can be used at will when the Space Key is pressed and Checkpoint Spotlights that illuminate the next Checkpoint the player should go through in order to correctly proceed around the track. |
Using a few tutorials around the net I was able to get my demo to a point where the foundations are now fully "complete". Cars can be fully tweaked by the user, Boost Orbs and Checkpoints can be simply dragged and dropped onto the scene and the countdown mechanic will automatically show a preview of the race track the user has selected and initiate the countdown when the tour is over (or manually skipped by the player).
Perhaps most impressive of all though, the AI load checkpoints into a Pathfinding Array so that however you design a track, they will always make it round whilst avoiding each other and any off-road areas.

Racing Concept in Action
Here is a gameplay video of the Racing Concept Demo that I've published on Youtube with some music over the top.
